जौ का वैज्ञानिक नाम "होर्डेम वल्गारे" है और दुर्गा नवरात्रि के पहले दिन बोया जाता है। हमारे शास्त्रों के अनुसार, जौ सृष्टि की शुरुआत के बाद पहली फसल थी, इसलिए जब भी देवी-देवताओं की पूजा की जाती है, तो जौ को हवन में चढ़ाया जाता है। ऐसा माना जाता है कि नवरात्रि में उगने वाली जौ भविष्य से जुड़ी कुछ चीजों का संकेत होती है। वास्तव में, इसके पीछे मुख्य कारण यह है कि जौ को ब्रह्म माना जाता है और हमें अनाज का सम्मान करना चाहिए। कहा जाता है कि यदि जौ के अंकुर दो से तीन दिनों में नहीं उगते हैं, फिर भविष्य में आपके लिए कोई अच्छा संकेत नहीं है, अर्थात आपको कड़ी मेहनत के बाद ही फल मिलेगा।
