Sharad Navratri - Day- 2 Brahmacharini
The second form of Mother Durga's new power is that of Brahmacharini. Brahmacharini means follower of Tenacity. The form of Brahmacharini Devi is fully lit and very magnificent. The garland of chanting in her right hand “Kamandalu” remains in the left hand. In her former birth, she was born as a daughter of the Himalayas, and through Narada's sermon, she did extremely difficult penance to get Lord Shankar as her husband. Due to this arduous austerity, he was named as Tapashcharini i.e. Brahmacharini.
She spent a thousand years eating only fruits and roots. Had to subsist for hundred years only on herbs. Having a hard fast for a few days, under the open sky, suffered terrible sufferings of rain and sunlight. Due to this difficult austerity of several thousand years, the body of the former birth of Brahmacharini Devi became completely degraded. She had become very agrarian. Her mother Maina became very sad to see her condition. He gave them a voice to overcome that difficult austerity, 'Uma', hey! Since then, one of the previous births of Goddess Brahmacharini was also named Uma.
Her austerity caused chaos in all three worlds. Gods, sages, determinative sages all started praising Brahmacharini Devi for this austerity as an unprecedented virtuous act. Finally, “Pitamah Brahmaji” addressed him through Oracle and said - 'O Goddess! No one had done such a hard penance until today. Such austerity was possible with you only. Your supernatural act is being roundly appreciated. Your wish will be perfect you will get “Lord Chandramauli Shiv” as your husband. Now you overcome with penance and return home. Soon your father is coming to call you.
This second form of Goddess Durga is going to give eternal fruits to devotees and Siddhas. Their worship leads to the growth of human tenacity, sacrifice, quietness, virtue, self-control. Even in the difficult struggles of life, her mind does not deviate from the path of duty. By the grace of Goddess Brahmacharini, she attains perfection and victory everywhere. The same form is worshiped on the second day of Durga Puja. On this day, the mind of the seeker is situated in the 'Swadhisthana' cycle. A yogi with a mind situated in this chakra receives her grace and devotion.

माँ दुर्गा की नव शक्ति का दूसरा स्वरूप ब्रह्मचारिणी का है। ब्रह्मचारिणी अर्थात तप का आचरण करनेवाली। ब्रह्मचारिणी देवीका स्वरूप पूर्ण ज्योतिर्मय एवं अत्यन्त भव्य है। इनके दाहिने हाथ में जप की माला एवं बायें हाथ में कमण्डलु रहता है। अपने पूर्व जन्म में ये हिमालय के घर पुत्री रुप में उत्पन्न हुई थी तब नारदके उपदेश से इन्होंने भगवान् शंकर जी को पति-रूप में प्राप्त करने के लिये अत्यन्त कठिन तपस्या की थी। इसी दुष्कर तपस्या के कारण इनें तपश्चारिणी अर्थात ब्रह्मचारिणी नाम से अभिहित किया गया।
एक हजार वर्ष उन्होंने केवल फल-मूल खाकर व्यतीत किये थे। सौ वर्षों तक केवल शाक पर निर्वाह किया था। कुछ दिनों तक कठिन उपवास रखते हुए खुले आकाश के नीचे वर्षा और धूप के भयानक कष्ट सहे। कई हजार वर्षों की इस कठिन तपस्या के कारण ब्रह्मचारिणी देवी का वह पूर्व जन्म का शरीर एकदम क्षीण हो उठा। वह अत्यन्त ही कृशकाय हो गयी थी। उनकी यह दशा देखकर उनकी माता मेना अत्यन्त दुःखित हो उठी। उन्होंने उन्हें उस कठिन तपस्या से विरत करने के लिये आवाज दी 'उमा', अरे! तबसे देवी ब्रह्मचारिणी का पूर्वजन्म का एक नाम उमा भी पड़ गया था।
उनकी इस तपस्या तीनों लोकों में हाहाकार मच गया। देवता, ऋषि, सिद्धगण, मुनि सभी ब्रह्मचारिणी देवी की इस तपस्या को अभूतपूर्व पुण्य कृत्य बताते हुए उनकी सराहना करने लगे। अंत में पितामह ब्रह्माजी ने आकाशवाणी के द्वारा उन्हें सम्बोधित करते हुए कहा-'हे देवी! आजतक किसीने ऐसी कठोर तपस्या नहीं की थी। ऐसी तपस्या तुम्हीं से संभव थी। तुम्हारे इस अलौकिक कृत्य की चतुर्दिक सराहना हो रही है। तुम्हारी मनोकाममा सर्वतोभावेन परिपूर्ण होगी। “भगवान् चन्द्रमौलि शिवजी” तुम्हें पति रूप में प्राप्त होंगे। अब तुम तपस्या से विरत होकर घर लौट जाओ। शीघ्र ही तुम्हारे पिता तुम्हें बुलाने आ रहे हैं।
माँ दुर्गाजी का यह दूसरा स्वरूप भक्तों और सिद्धों को अनन्त फल देने वाला है। इनकी उपासना से मनुष्य तप, त्याग, वैराग्य, सदाचार, संयम की वृद्धि होती है। जीवन के कठिन संघर्षों में भी उसका मन कर्तव्य-पथ से विचलित नहीं होता। माँ ब्रह्मचारिणी देवी की कृपा से उसे सर्वत्र सिद्धि और विजय की प्राप्ति होती है। दुर्गा पूजा के दूसरे दिन इन्हीं के स्वरूप की उपासना की जाती है। इस दिन साधक का मन 'स्वाधिष्ठान' चक्र में स्थित होता है। इस चक्र में अवस्थित मन वाला योगी उनकी कृपा और भक्ति प्राप्त करता है।
